I think you missed a point to his questions that isn't covered in the FAQ.
Yes, your pet will gain happiness just sitting there being fed, although it does gain more happiness while it's fighting.
I leave my pet out with the automatic feeder going when I take a break, so he'll gain loyalty.
You can only do that till you AFK offline
